We Need More

Stewards of the Creek

Trained for impact! With support from the Hudson River Estuary Program, many of our volunteers were trained in scientific water monitoring methods. We work for a healthier watershed through partnerships with Riverkeeper and the DEC’s Trees for Tribs stream restoration program.

Members of the Sparkill Creek Watershed Alliance also lead stream cleanups and volunteer in eel and aquatic life monitoring. You can learn more about creek conditions in our Water Report Card.

You can help us make Sparkill Creek healthier.

We work with scientists, DEC, Riverkeeper, Orangetown, and Rockland County to identify creek problems and create solutions.

We are family-friendly, welcome all, and are seeking new board members to help lead the organization into the future.

Every gesture of support is appreciated. There is no minimum time commitment, and we are grateful for any time or financial contribution you can give.

Get involved however your schedule allows.

Water Sampling: Come Get Your Hands in the Creek!

The Sparkill Watershed sampling program was one of the first citizen science partnerships with Riverkeeper and remains a model for other watersheds.

For many years, the Sparkill Creek Watershed Alliance has monitored water quality through sampling of:

  • Bacteria (enterococcus): helps identify possible pollution or sewage discharge

  • Chemistry & nutrients: reveals imbalances linked to local land use and runoff

  • Macroinvertebrates: indicator species that reflect stream health over time

Members, individuals, and families are invited to learn about watershed science and join us for sampling.

Are You an Environmental Student?

If you are a student in the field of ecology, marine science, botany, or any earth science related concentration: come to a meeting.

Learn how to navigate the ins and outs of a nonprofit organization that works hands-on with sampling events for water quality or upkeep of different ecological functions.

Experiences of SCWA:

  • Remove invasive plants in the water or creek-side

  • Sample for bacteria or nutrients in our watershed

  • Contribute to a cleanup of local pollution

  • Connect with others participating in initiatives across NYS

  • Document environmental issues in the area

  • Be a citizen scientist and an active advocate of our community

Come to our next meeting.
